Greed, murder and remorse play a part in the opening chapter. Trouble - political, social, and personal - accompanies this gem to it's last resting place. Originally known as the Pitt, this 410-carat stone was one of the last large diamonds to be found in India. It is said to have been discovered by a slave in the Parteal Mines (also spelled 'Partial') on the Kistna River about 1701. The slave stole the enormous rough concealing it in bandages of a self-inflicted leg wound, and fled to the seacoast. There, he divulged his secret to an English sea captain, offering him half the value of the stone in return for safe passage to a free country. But during the voyage to Bombay, temptation overcame this seafaring man and he murdered the slave took th diamond. After selling it to an Indian diamond merchant named Jamchund for about $5000, the captain squandered the proceeds in dissipation and, in a fit of remorse and delirium tremens, hanged himself.
In 1702, Jamchund sold the stone for about $100,000 to Governor Thomas Pitt of Ft. George, Madras, who was the grandfather of William Pitt of American Revolutionary fame. Known to historians as the "Elder Pitt," William was the British Prime Minister for whom Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was named. He sent it to England and had it fashioned into a 140.50 carat cushion-shaped brilliant cut, measuring approximately 32mm × 34mm × 25mm. The cutting took two years and cost about $25,000, but a number of smaller stones brought more than $35,000; some of these were rose-cut stones that were sold to Peter the Great of Russia. The principal gem, which has but one very small imperfection, is today considered one of the finest and most brilliant of the known large diamonds.

The Regent Diamond's facet pattern, from Gemcad. This design was originally
created by R.H., Long & Steele, but was missing the 'needle' pavilion facets
as well as the vertically split star facets on the crown. British gemologist
Michael Hing altered the design to be more accurate, adding the missing facets.
This image is a few screengrabs from the stone's Gemcad file. If you'd like a
copy of the Gemcad file, please email me. Mr. Hing has personally handled a number
of large diamonds, among them the Hortensia, Sancy, Mouna and Tiffany Yellow. If you'd like a Gemcad file of this stone, please visit the United States Faceters Guild Yahoo Group.
It takes about 1 minute to join if you already have a Yahoo screen name.
In 1717, the gem was sold to Philip II, Duke of Orleans, then Regent of France, for about $650,000; since that time, it has been known as the Regent Diamond. It was set in the crown of Crown of Louis XV and worn at his coronation in February, 1723. Removed from the crown, it was worn by Queen Marie Leczinska in her hair. Two generations later, when the French Crown Jewels were adorned the Royal Family in many different kinds of personal ornaments, Marie Antoinette used the Regent to adorn a large black-velvet hat.
The coveted gem disappeared, together with the equally famous Sancy and French Blue (from which the Hope was cut), when the Garde Meuble (Royal Treasury) was robbed of it's fabulous jewels in 1792, during the early part of the Revolution. Some of the gems were soon recovered, but the Regent could not at first be traced. After fifteen months, however, it was found, having been secreted in a hole under the timberwork of a Paris garret.
In 1797, the great gem was pledged for money that helped Napolean in his ride to power. He had in mounted in the hilt of his sword that he carried at his coronation in 1804. When Napolean went into exile in Elba in 1814, Marie Louisa, his second wife, carried the Regent to the Chateau of Blois. Later, however, her father, Emperor Francis I of Austria, returned it to France and it again became part of the French Crown Jewels.
In 1825, Charles X wore the Regent at his coronation; it remained in the Royal Crown until the time of Napolean III. Then, a place was made for it in a Greek diadem designed for Empress Eugenie.
Many of the French Crown Jewels were sold at auction in 1887, but the Regent was reserved from the sale and exhibited at the Louvre amoung the national treasures. In 1940, when the Germans invaded Paris, it was sent to the chateau country, this time to Chambord, where it was secreted behind a stone panel. After the War, it was returned to Paris and put on display in the Apollon Gallery of the Louvre Museum. It was one of the features of the Ten Centuries of French Jewelry exhibition at the Museum in 1962. An alternate name sometimes used is the Millionaire Diamond. Women the world over love morganite for its fine pink tones whichradiate charm, esprit and tenderness.Although this gemstone came into being millions of years ago, it has only been known by thename of morganite for less than a hundred years. To be precise, in fact, since 1911, sincebefore that the gemmological world simply viewed the 'pink beryl' as a variety of beryl, not as agemstone in its own right. But it is not only people that change their name. Gemstonessometimes do it too. And so it was that in 1911, on the suggestion of the New York gemmologistG. F. Kunz, the pink variety of beryl was ennobled to the status of a gemstone in its own right. Inhonour of the banker and mineral collector John Pierpont Morgan, it was given the name underwhich it is known today: morganite.Beryls are beryllium aluminium silicates rich in minerals. Pure beryl is colourless. However, onaccount of its structure, it is in a position to intercalate foreign elements such as iron, manganese, chrome or vanadium. If manganese is intercalated in beryl, the rather plain, colourless gemstone turns into an enchanting pink treasure: morganite. Today, this gemstonemainly comes from deposits in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan and California. Its goodhardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale is the reason for its excellent wearing qualities. There are morganites in many fine pink hues. Some are decidedly pink, whilst others tend moreto lilac or light violet. Or there may be a hint of orange - when all's said and done, MotherNature has provided the right gemstone colour for each type and each skin colour. The colour ofmorganite always emanates charm, esprit and a touch of tenderness. This gemstone has awonderful gift: even in stressful times, it shows up the brighter aspects of life. Try it out yourselfand you'll see: the sight of a morganite will put you in a good mood. A person who chooses thisgemstone opts for 'la vie en rose' even in the greyness of everyday life. So it's easy to see whymorganite is typically used in gemstone therapy for stress-related problems, radiating as it doesa pleasant feeling of relaxation, calm and joie de vivre. When determining the quality of a morganite, the colour is the most important criterion. Notethat this gemstone should be selected in as large a size as possible, for it is only above acertain size that the beauty of its colour really comes into its own. The rule which says 'the moretransparent, the more valuable' only applies to a certain extent, for there are plenty of womenwho would prefer a morganite with fine inclusions like pure silk. What is certain is that the cutreally is a decisive factor, for only a high-quality cut will allow the subtle colour of the morganiteto shine out.http://www.gemstone.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=131:sapphire&catid=1:gem-by-gem&Itemid=14

Great Mogul Diamond - 787.50ct raw weight

Found in India in the middle of the seventeenth century, the Great Mogul is said to have weighed 787.50 carats in the rough. It was among the treasures of the famous Shah Jehan, famous builder of the Taj Mahal and owner of the Koh-i-Noor. He ruled a powerful empire just north of Golconda, in India, where diamonds were first discovered. Aurangzeb, the son of the French traveler and gem expert, Tavernier, presumably the only European to see it. Tavernier, who said it resembled "the half of an eff cut through the middle," published a picture of it, from which all known replicas have been made. The Great Mogul was a rose-cut stone and weighed only 280cts according to Tavernier's reckoning, at the time he saw it. He was told that Hortensio Borgio, a Venetian who cut the stone from the original 787.50-carat rough, did such a poor job that the Mogul refused to pay him; rather, he was fined 10,000 rupees, his entire fortune. The further history is unknown, but it is believed to have been among the loot carried off by the Persians after the sack of Delhi in 1739. Curiously, The description of the Orloff closely resembles that of the Great Mogul, except in weight, and some experts think that it is the same stone and that Tavernier may have miscalculated in translating the Indian rati, or diamond weight (1.87grams), into the European standard, the carat. The Diamond Dictionary, second edition 1977Robert A.P.Gaal, PHD

Gemstone knowledge: Luster

The luster of a mineral is the quality of shining in reflected light. Now is the time that we like to show our customers how much we appreciate their business & support throughout the year. The first Wednesday in December we here at Medlar's throw our annual Customer Appreciation Party. This year the party is to be on December 1st from 5pm to 9pm. As with last year, we have a special representative from Kabana bringing new items along with their expertise to help you find the perfect gift! Every year has been a wonderful time to enjoy music, food, drinks & association, with an added benefit to our customers of 15% off just about anything in the store! We have some of the most unique & beautiful pieces of jewelry to adorn anyone or any occasion! And if you don't see what you want, we can make it from scratch.

Some interesting Turquoise trivia connected to December to tantalize the mind: December's birthstone is traditionally Turquoise. Turquoise was so named because it was initially brought to Europe by way of Turkey. Interestingly Turquoise does NOT occur in Turkey, but was only traded at Turkish bazaars to Venetian merchants who brought it to Europe. Turquoise is one of the first gems to be used in jewelry! Turquoise was considered by the ancients to be a sacred stone, protective against all manners of evil and ill health. In 1810, Napoleon Bonaparte gave his empress a dazzling diamond and turquoise crown as a wedding gift. The crown was not originally made with turquoise, however, but instead with 79 emeralds which Bonaparte had removed & replaced!! The Indians of North America, who still produce a good deal of traditional silver jewelry with turquoises today, believe that the sky-blue gemstone opens up a direct connection between the sky and the sea.

Why don't you open up a direct connection between you and the one you love, by joining us for the Customer Appreciation Party December 1st! Food, drinks, music, association and 15% Off!! We love our Customers! Yikes! Where does the time go? Though it is my opinion that we should give "thanks" Everyday, here in the United States there is a Day of "Thanks" set aside in November. Now for most of us it means feasting on one of the best meals of the year and a few extra pounds. It is also the time of year that retailers have offered choice products at huge savings the day after Thanksgiving, therefore acquiring the name "Black Friday." It is debatable as to whether it is "Black" because retailers are hoping to put their sales in the "black" instead of the "red;" or because of the dark & ominous feeling it puts on those that "have" to shop with the hoards of people all hoping to get the real "deals" that will help them with the next up & coming holiday of traditional gift-giving.

Let's talk about one of my favorite things.; Gems! The gem stone for November is Topaz. Topaz is a beautiful stone that comes in a variety of colors. The most famous topaz is a colorless 1680 ct. gem called the Braganza Diamond that is housed in the Portuguese Crown Jewels. Never to be out done in this great State of Texas; Blue Topaz is our state Gem. Texans have found a way to cut the gem stone so that when you look at the cut topaz you see a "Lone Star" smack dab in the middle of your Gem!! One of the largest Topaz is housed in a Texas sized safe in the beautiful town of Mason , and if you ask the proprietor kindly( with a lot of praise), he may just open that safe & allow you a very exclusive viewing of The Biggest Topaz in Texas!!
If you wish to bless anyone with the beautiful gift of this fabulous stone, of course , you should consider Medlars. We have some of the most beautiful Topaz in several colors, set in some of the most beautiful ways! I can tell you from experience that a perfect way to show someone "Thanks", is a gemstone. We have a variety in stock to fit the budget and color preference. If you wish to miss the shopping madness to prepare for the days ahead, please come by & just take a look!! I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

October, the Month to "Fall" for Opals!

It's officially Fall everyone! Doesn't it feel good to experience the weather change!? The beautiful colors of fall bring to mind the rich multicolor that can be found in Opals; the official birthstone for October.
Opal has been called the Queen of Gems. The precious Opal is very delicate and can contain up to 30% water, so they must be protected from harsh chemicals & heat, both which can cause the stone to dry out & crack or lose it's iridescence. Almost 95% percent of all the world's opals come from the Australian Outback. Makes you want to plan a trip to Australia!
Some interesting facts about Opals: Because of it's distinctive ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light, the Opal has been called "Cupid Paederos" by the Romans which means "a child beautiful as love. The Andamooka Opal was presented to Queen Elizabeth II in the 1950's on the occasion of her first visit to Australia. Cut and polished by John Altmann to a weight of 203cts!!!; it was set with diamonds into a 75% palladium neck-let. Palladium, like platinum is a pure white metal that keeps it's color.
The esteem for Opals continued until the 17th century, but afterward lkost it's popularity. Why? The attitude that the Opal was "unlucky" was caused in part, by the Novel "Anne of Geierstein" by Sir Walter Scott, in which the Opal played a malevolent role. Sales of Opals dropped drastically after the release of this Book. Since the Opal is so delicate and had a tendency to "crack" if not properly taken care of, that along with the Novel solidified the "bad luck" reputation of the misunderstood Opal. Not until today has that stigmatization been lifted.
Today, the appreciation for the true beauty & delicacy of the Opal has manifested itself by the use of the Opal in some of the prettiest & most stunning jewelry pieces.
White Opal is opaque with a porcelain look flashing specks of color & sheets of rainbows. The white is the Opal most commonly seen.
Black Opal also contains alot of "fire" inside a body that is dark gray or black which accentuates the play of color. The "depth" of color sometimes seen in Black Opals gives the illusion the the colors just go on & on. Black Opals are "rare" & costly.
Water Opal is transparent, colorless, but still contains brilliant flashes swimming within it.
Fire Opal is transparent or translucent with an orange or red body color. The term "fire opal" is frequently misused. Opal that has a color play is called precious Opal. The color play itself is called fire. Fire Opals are simply reddish or orange Opals, usually turbid, that may not have Any "fire" or color play.
Speaking of "fire", and orange & red hues, October has already greeted us with some of the finest, crispest weather in a long while. All around us the trees are experiencing the change in color. Why not experience the color changes yourself by adorning or giving the gift of an Opal; the Queen of Gems!

A Sapphire September

It's September! The traditional birthstone for the Month of September is Sapphire. Sapphires are commonly thought of to be in shades of blue, but actually you can find Sapphires in every shade of the rainbow!
Believe it or not Sapphires were mined as early as the 7th Century from India and what is now known as Sri Lanka. Today you can find sapphires in Sri Lanka , Kashmir , Myanmar, Thailand, Australia, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, China, Madagascar, and the United States.
Sapphires are prominent among the British Crown Jewels, and it is an interesting fact that Prince Charles had chosen the Sapphire as the engagement stone for the then fiancee', Princess Diana. Another interesting fact is that in 1981 Silent Film Star Mary Pickford donated her 182 carat Star of Bombay sapphire to the Smithsonian Institute. Even farther back in history, it was believed that the "Ten Commandments" were written on sapphire tablets!
Medlar's North Inc. in San Antonio,Texas has beautiful sapphire jewelry available for "the perfect gift"! Peridot is one of the few gemstones that come in only one color. The earliest recorded production of Peridot is in 70 A.D. from St Johns Island in the Red Sea, which is about 54 km off the coast of Egypt.Pronounced "pair uh doe"; Peridot crystals were discovered by Natives in the black sands of Hawaii which explains their presence as tears shed by the volcano goddess Pele. The majority of Peridot today, between 80 and 95%, comes from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. It was once believed that the Peridot glowed with light even as darkness fell, which is why miners were said to have scouted for these gems during the night , marking their location, and returning in the light of day to retrieve them.Traces of Peridot have been found in meteorites, making it THE ONLY jewelry-quality gem to exist in outer space!!
In writing this post I have acquired a new respect for this "once looked down upon" gem stone. We all should appreciate our Planet; and especially if you are in the business of designing & setting precious gems for those that love to adorn themselves & others with the "fruits" of the earth. April is known for the month of diamonds. The Diamond is harder than any other substance on earth, therefore it is highly prized & valued. For a woman, there is nothing like owning a piece of jewelry with diamonds. We have seen the eyes of recipients sparkle with joy & anticipation when they gaze upon this most beautiful gem. Diamonds really speak to the heart, so if you want to show someone special that you really love & prize them, then choose to give them diamonds. Queen Victoria declared the celebration of her 50th year reign a "Diamond Jubilee." Richard Burton expressed his love for Elizabeth Taylor with one of the largest diamonds to adorn a human being. In 1919 Mathematician and gem enthusiast Marcel Tolkowsky developed the round brilliant cut by calculating the ideal shape to return and scatter light when a diamond is viewed from above. If you want that same light to shine in your loved ones eyes, then give them diamonds.
So this day, Earth Day, & the rest of the month, think diamonds.

Win 2 Carat Diamond for Charity!!!!

Sip Champagne with Fiesta Royalty!

Fiesta Commission President ♦ Mary Begia

King Antonio LXXXVIII ♦ Nick Campbell

Rey Feo LXII ♦ Baltazar "Walter" Serna

Fiesta Royalty Grito Contest

Silent Auction

Lo Bello de San Antonio

Women’s Club

invites you to discover

a beautiful two carat diamond

at the bottom of one lucky glass

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Mother's Day in 30 Days! What better marriage is there? None! Let us take your Diamonds & put them in a new creation!Need diamonds? We can help you!
Let's talk about the little diamond lessons that have been inspired by science: A diamond sure goes through a lot before it reaches us & then adorns your finger, wrist, or neck. A diamond forms deep in the earth under extreme pressure and heat. The conditions required to form a diamond are so intense that it took scientists centuries before they could accurately project or mimic them. There is a lesson we can learn from this : Life is an unfolding process. Every stage in life brings new opportunities to learn something. No matter how much pressure and heat you experience in life, remember that hard work & patience are always rewarded.
It seems that colorless diamonds get all the attention, but diamonds come in an array of colors; beautiful blues, pretty pinks, spring yellows, cognac oranges....There is also something we can learn from this: Each of us bring a different "color" of uniqueness to the table. Each of us has a unique combination of Talents, skills, & abilities that add value to life; much like the fancy & colorful diamonds do to each custom piece we create. Don't be afraid to shine!
It has been said that 'diamonds are forever" since the chemical structure of carbon is the hardest natural substance on our planet. Owning diamonds give us the unique ability to have an heirloom to bless the next generation. What you leave behind could be more important than what value you place on what you are doing today!
So, create a diamond legacy in your life that will be valued & appreciated forever!

You can come in & get your jewelry cleaned for free! This is NO joke! Although,Today is known as April Fool's Day, the day when practical jokes abound. We were curious as to the origin, so this is what we found...Interesting!
The history of April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1.
Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1.
These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke.

This harassment evolved over time and a custom of prank-playing continue on the first day of April. This tradition eventually spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool's Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way.

In Scotland, for instance, April Fool's Day is devoted to spoofs involving the buttocks and as such is called Taily Day. The butts of these jokes are known as April 'Gowk', another name for cuckoo bird. The origins of the "Kick Me" sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

In England, jokes are played only in the morning. Fools are called 'gobs' or 'gobby' and the victim of a joke is called a 'noodle.' It was considered back luck to play a practical joke on someone after noon.

In Rome, the holiday is known as Festival of Hilaria, celebrating the resurrection of the god Attis, is on March 25 and is also referred to as "Roman Laughing Day."

In Portugal, April Fool's Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before lent. In this celebration, many people throw flour at their friends.

The Huli Festival is celebrated on March 31 in India. People play jokes on one another and smear colors on one another celebrating the arrival of Spring.

So, no matter where you happen to be in the world on April 1, don't be surprised if April fools fall playfully upon you.

Happy Friday!!

..Happy Friday Everybody! The music of the day is Jazz!! Custom Jewelry is in the works, & the flow of traffic so far are ones buying & selling bullion. With the thoughts of some turning to Spring & Easter; we are going to talk about bloodstone. The name bloodstone derives from the belief that the red colorization in the stone resulted from the blood of Christ spilling onto the green jasper during the crucifixion: The stone has also been called "martyr's stone." Bloodstone is in the Chalcedony family & has a hardness of 7. Chalcedony is formed in several environments, generally near the surface of the earth where temperatures and pressures or relatively low. The dark green variety speckled with red inclusions is called heliotrope, but the layperson will recognize it as bloodstone. The name Chalcedon is derived from an ancient city of Asia Minor. Bloodstone is recognized by some as a birthstone for March; though the common birthstone for March is Aquamarine.
That's your trivia for Today! May you all have a great but safe weekend!

Green Monday?

Even though St. Patty's day is past, it's still "green" here at Medlar's.
